The Appointment Process

  1. The first thing that happens when you decide to be a volunteer in Scouting is that you meet with a line manager.  This is usually a Group Scout Leader, District Explorer Scout Commissioner or District Commissioner.  This person will talk to you about your skills and experience and the type of volunteering that you are interested in so we can find the best role for you.  They will explain what is involved in each role, talk to you about the training requirements for the role and agree a role description.
  2. Once you and your line manager have decided on your role, they will collect some information and enter it into our Adult database – Compass.
  3. If a Disclosure check is needed for your role it will be initiated at this time. You will also be asked to name two referees and you may be invited to see the Appointments Advisory Committee.  These checks are designed to safeguard our young people and the Movement’s assets. They help verify there are no reasons why you should not be involved in a youth organisation.  The checks are completed quickly and in confidence.
  4. While this process is in place you have a Pre-provisional appointment.  You can start helping out in your role.  You can also begin your Getting Started training. This will give you more information about Scouting and your role and how to ensure that activities are run safely.
  5. When the checks are completed, your appointment status changes to Provisional.  You have five months from the date of your appointment to complete your Getting Started Training.

Getting Started Training

To support adults in Scouting, we provide a great programme of training. This helps you to build on your existing skills and knowledge and to develop new skills.  We will pair you with a Training Adviser (TA) to support you through this process.  Your TA will explain how the Adult Training Scheme works and ensure that you have a copy of the Adults’ Personal File (links below). Your TA will assess the skills and experience you already have and match them to your new role. Then you and your TA will work out a learning plan that will be beneficial in supporting you in Scouting.

Build a good relationship with your TA. TAs are experienced volunteers and great to ask advice from or bounce ideas off as you settle into your role.
