Cardboard Canoe Challenge 2026

Calling all Scouts and Explorer Scouts across Herefordshire and Worcestershire!
Put your teamwork and problem solving to the test by entering a team in the first ever County Cardboard Canoe Challenge.
Please support this fundraising event which is being organised and led by our World Scout Jamboree Unit.
- Sunday 31 May from 09:15 to 16:00
- Cost: £20 per Scout/Explorer (excluding food and drinks)
- Venue: 5th Worcester Sea Scouts, Parkview Terrace, WR3 7AG
Challenge
Teams will have 1 hour and 30 minutes to construct their canoe, you will then race it on the River Severn. Half of the teams will do this in the morning and half in the afternoon. There will be prizes for the winning team!
Also on offer
The other half of your day will include a variety of water based activities including SUPs, canoes and kayaks. You’ll be able to get your leaders to sign you off for ‘Time on the water’ and also might be able to earn a PaddleUK certificate.
There will also be a variety of other activities which you can pay for at reasonable prices, including a BBQ lunch, drinks, snacks and sweets, axe throwing and souvenirs.
Materials
You must bring with you all of your own materials. We suggest…
- Very large and very strong cardboard boxes (flattened)
- A few rolls of strong tape
- Strong scissors (e.g. tuff-cut shears) – no knives are permitted at this event
- Some marker pens, waterproof paint or accessories for decoration which are non-toxic and safe to use in the river
- Some very large and strong bin bags for you to take home all your soggy cardboard – sadly we cannot dispose of it for you, but you can dry it out at home and then recycle it, or cut up the wet cardboard into small pieces and compost it (please note that these bags nor any plastic sheeting cannot be used to waterproof your canoe)
- Please also bring some cash and/or card to pay for the other activities and refreshments available.
It’s up to your team to decide if the canoe is for one person or more. Recommended team size is 3 to 5 Scouts / Explorer Scouts. You can have adults supporting you at no extra charge (as long as they support the event by buying some food and drink!). You should plan, make and test small scale prototype models before the event as part of your preparations, but all construction and decoration of the actual race canoe must be completed on site during the allocated building time, otherwise penalty points will be deducted.
Scoring System
Points will be awarded out of 10 in the following categories. Judges’ decisions are final.
- On the water performance
- Ambition of design
- Creativity of decoration
Kit List
Each person will need
- suitable closed-toe shoes (e.g. old trainers) that won’t come off in the river (no crocs or sliders)
- a complete change of clothes
- a towel
- some plastic bags for wet clothes
- a wetsuit is recommended if you have one, but it needs to cover your legs and arms (if you have a shorty wetsuit, you’ll need a long sleeved base layer and leggings to go under it).
