Be a Trustee

Be a Trustee

Make a difference to thousands of young people

At Scouts, our mission is to empower young people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, giving them skills for life and a place to belong.

We are looking for enthusiastic new Trustees to join our team to support this mission and the volunteers who are making it happen.

What is it all about?

Our Board is made up of 10 Trustees, all of whom are volunteers. Trustees work together and are led by a Chair. There is a dedicated Treasurer, but all other tasks are shared between the team according to individual skills and availability.

There are 4 scheduled evening meetings (usually online) and a face-to-face AGM every year, but there could be emergency meetings and decisions made by email in between these times. The County Administrator takes the Minutes and all information is stored on the Trustee SharePoint accessible only to Trustees.

What are we looking for?

We are seeking Trustees who are committed and enthusiastic with a passion for Scouting and time to dedicate to this role.

Previous experience in Scouting or in a governance role is not necessary; we are keen to have a wide range of skills and experiences on the Board. Candidates aged between 18 and 25 are particularly encouraged to apply.

Key qualities:

  • Curiosity and Inquisitiveness: A willingness to ask challenging, sometimes difficult, questions to ensure the Scout County is performing well.
  • Respectful Challenger: Being a “critical friend” who can provide constructive challenge to the Board.
  • Strategic thinkers: The ability to focus on the “big picture,” such as the long-term strategy, rather than getting caught up in day-to-day operations.
  • Objectivity and Independence: The ability to make impartial decisions that are in the best interest of the charity, avoiding conflicts of interest.
  • Teamwork and Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with other board members and the operations team volunteers.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people who have knowledge, skills, and experience in:

  • Finance and HR
  • Project management
  • Communications and marketing
  • Community or other youth-focussed

What difference will you make?

Good governance helps to ensure that Scouting in Scouts Hereford & Worcester takes place in a safe environment, provides inclusive opportunities for young people and adults, delivers financial oversight and strategic leadership.

Our Trustees support everyone to provide exciting programmes and experiences for all our youth members.

Before you apply

Please send us your details using the attached form. Email it to HereToHelp@scoutshw.org.uk.

The Board operates an open selection policy according to the Policy, Organisation and Rules of The Scout Association (POR 5c.3).

Applications will be reviewed by current Trustees and successful applicants will be recommended for appointment at the County AGM on Wednesday 15th July.

The term of office is initially for 3 years and this can be extended for a further 2 terms up to a maximum period of 9 years.

Trustees are required to complete some mandatory learning to support them in their new role within 180 days from appointment. This is delivered digitally. As part of the Scout vetting process a DBS check and charity trustee eligibility will be carried out.
