Shirehike 2024

Date: 9th March 2024 Location: Colwall Scout HQ & Colwall Village Hall Sections: Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Scout Network, Adult Volunteer, Squirrel Scouts

Shirehike is returning on Saturday 9th March 2024 with a new base location of Colwall Scout HQ & Village Hall

The event is open to all sections with a variety of routes available to suit everyone.
  • Start and finish location: Colwall Scout HQ & Colwall Village Hall, Mill Lane, Colwall WR13 6EQ.
  • Route lengths are:
  • The above is our suggestion but leaders can enter teams to any route length based on their knowledge of the young people in their section.
  • All participants will receive a Shirehike badge.
  • A risk assessment will be sent to the leader making the booking to share with other leaders – see below.
  • A kit list will be sent to the leader making the booking to share with participants and a kit inspection will take place before each team starts the hike – see Event Handbook below.
  • The 37KM route will have cut off times at key points to ensure teams (and volunteer marshals) are not out for an excessive amount of time
  • Leaders must accompany young people with ratios as per POR
  • Recommended maximum number of participants per team is 8, including leaders, up to 10 by exception.
  • Multiple teams from Groups/Section can enter as long as POR ratios are met.
  • Toilets are available along the routes and details will be provided after booking.
  • Each route contains at least one commercial café and leaders should consider whether to advise young people to bring spending money. (Note: minimum card spend is £5).
  • We need volunteers to marshal the event so if you know of volunteers who are not walking with a team we would be grateful if they could help at a checkpoint. The more volunteers we have the easier it will be to share the workload and we will be able to relieve some of the volunteers who start earliest. please email shirehike@scoutshw.org.uk to volunteer.
  • Limited parking is available for leaders and other adult volunteers in Colwall Primary School’s car park and we thank Colwall School for its support. On street parking is also available on side streets within Colwall including further along Mill Lane near the Cricket Club.
  • There is limited space in the Village Hall car park so we ask parents to vacate the car park once they have dropped off their young people. We have nearly 700 people attending and supporting the event! The Baden Powell Guild – Malvern Branch has kindly offered to manage car parking.
  • Photography and videography will be used at Shirehike 2024 in accordance with Scouts Hereford & Worcester’s policy, which can be read here.
Leaders – please book and pay for your team(s) by 18th February 2024
